How to Prepare a Car Surface Before Applying a Sticker

Most application problems start before the transfer tape ever comes off. A vinyl decal needs direct contact with a suitable surface, so dirt, grease, wax and moisture can all get in the way.

Choose the surface first

Look for a smooth, sound area of paint or glass. Avoid loose paint, rust, porous materials, heavily textured trim and anything whose finish is already failing. Check the available space against the sticker size before you begin.

Wash away ordinary dirt

Road film and grit should not be trapped underneath the design. Clean the area using products appropriate for that automotive surface, then remove any remaining residue according to the cleaner's instructions.

Remove wax, polish and greasy residue

Detailing products are designed to leave something behind on the surface; vinyl adhesive generally wants the opposite. If the panel has recently been waxed or polished, make sure the chosen fitting area is free from residues that could prevent adhesion.

Dry it completely

Pay attention to panel gaps, seals and edges where water can hide and run back across your working area. Unless the particular decal calls for a different installation method, a clean and dry surface is the safest starting point for transfer-tape cut vinyl.

Do a final inspection
