How to Apply Vinyl Car Stickers

Precision-cut vinyl stickers apply differently from printed stickers because the design transfers onto the surface without a rectangular printed background. This guide covers the simple method used for Sticktopus car stickers and window decals.

Before you start

Choose a clean, smooth surface and make sure it is completely dry. Dust, wax, grease and moisture can stop vinyl bonding properly, so take a little time to prepare the area first.

How to apply a cut-vinyl sticker

  1. Position the sticker. Hold it in place first so you are happy with the alignment before removing the backing.
  2. Press the transfer tape firmly. Rub across the whole design so every part of the vinyl is attached to the clear transfer layer.
  3. Peel away the backing paper. Go slowly. The vinyl design should stay attached to the transfer tape.
  4. Apply to the surface. Start from one side and smooth across the design firmly, working outwards rather than dropping the whole sticker down at once.
  5. Press the design down. Rub across all letters, edges and small details so the vinyl has made good contact with the surface.
  6. Remove the transfer tape slowly. Peel it back at a low angle. The vinyl design should remain on the car or window.

Once applied, clean around the design carefully with a damp cloth and avoid picking at fine edges. Good surface preparation and careful application are the most important parts of getting a clean result.
