Can Car Stickers Go Through a Car Wash?

A properly applied vinyl car sticker is designed to live outdoors, so normal washing does not automatically mean trouble. The important part is how the sticker was fitted, how long it has had to settle and how aggressively the edges are washed.

Give a freshly fitted sticker time before washing

The adhesive needs a chance to form a reliable bond with the surface. Avoid fitting a decal immediately before a wash. After application, leave it alone in dry conditions and follow any product-specific fitting instructions before subjecting it to water, shampoo or pressure.

Hand washing is the gentlest option

A normal hand wash is generally easier on vinyl than repeatedly attacking the design with high pressure. Wash over the decal rather than scrubbing hard at individual letters or deliberately catching the edges with a mitt or brush.

Be careful with pressure washers

Pressure itself is not the only issue: a concentrated jet aimed directly at a vinyl edge can try to lift it. Keep sensible distance, avoid holding the nozzle against the decal and do not chase around the edges of lettering. The same principle applies to very detailed cut designs, where there are more individual edges than on a solid rectangle.

What about automatic car washes?

Automatic washes vary enormously. Soft-cloth systems, stiff brushes and powerful chemicals can place different stresses on exterior graphics. If preserving a decal for as long as possible is the priority, a careful hand wash gives you more control.

Watch the edges
